A good organisation design consultant needs
the experience to be authoritative when necessary, to know
the right questions to ask and to be able to provoke, as well
as contribute, new ideas.
I have run projects in the UK, Continental
Europe, North America, the Middle East and South East Asia.
This enables me to reflect cultural factors in organisation
design and to allow for the cultural biases inherent in some
organisation thinking.
My experience also crosses sector lines. I
have consulted in finance, banking – central, international,
investment, commercial, retail, merchant and private –
electronics, IT, defence, aerospace, transport, manufacturing,
services, national government, utilities and the professions.
Examples of the breadth of organisation
projects I have been involved in include:
Developing a structure to merge a merchant
bank and a firm of stockbrokers
Recommending ways to measure quality
in some big government departments
Restructuring a major central bank to
be more effective in supervising commercial and retail
banks in a newly liberalised economic environment
Helping an airline identify and resolve
internal differences of view about the kinds of customer
experience to be designed in to a new airport terminal
Improving the profitability of an industrial
services company by changing its business and organisational
models and cutting out costs
Investigating the organisational causes
of repeated failures in the management of a university
department
Modelling a water utility so that its
directors could better evaluate the impact on customer
service, investment, and leakage rates of the pricing
policies to be included in their submission to the industry
regulator
Helping an air freight company decide
whether a new worldwide tracking system could be better
used to support well trained employees in giving high
levels of service or to implement an automated service
that would employ less able but cheaper employees.
I began my consulting career with specialist
organisation development and human resources consulting firms,
ODA International and IDRH SA, became a project consultant
with International Survey Research (now a division of Towers
Perrin), was a principal in PA Consulting’s Organisation
Group, joined the Alexander Consulting Group as a Director
of its Organisation Effectiveness Practice, and was part of
the leadership team in Logica’s Business Consulting
Group.
More recently I spent 4 years with Kiddy &
Partners, the leading assessment and talent management specialists,
where I continue to provide support – as a long-term
associate – for assignments involving organisational
change or redesign. I am a member of the international Organization
Design Forum.
